Budget 2021: Devon reacts to Rishi Sunak's spending plans

Devon has been reacting to the Chancellor's March 2021 budget.

Rishi Sunak set out his spending plans in the House of Commons yesterday (3 March).

Some of the key announcements were:

  • Furlough extended until end of September
  • Stamp duty holiday extended until end of June
  • Fuel duty freeze to continue
  • Continued freeze on alcohol taxes
  • Freeze to income tax
  • 95% mortgages in an attempt to boost housing market
  • Cash grants for self-employed
  • £300 million for World Cup bid and sports

The Chancellor also announced an extension to the VAT reduction and business rates holiday for hospitality and tourism firms.

The CEO of the Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce says yesterday's budget gives local businesses the certainty they need.

A local tourism boss has also welcomed yesterday's budget announcements but has concerns some of the support doesn't go far enough.

Amanda Lumley from Destination Plymouth says she's pleased Rishi Sunak confirmed specific support for hospitality and tourism.
