Armed Forces Day returns to Plymouth today (Saturday 25 June), for the first time in two years due to the pandemic.

There's plenty going on at the family-friendly event on The Hoe, including: an all-day arena and stage programme, parades, live music, a static helicopter and displays of military vehicles and equipment.

This year to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, there will be a dedicated veterans parade around the Hoe led by the HM Royal Marine Band Plymouth, starting at 2.00pm from the Royal Citadel.

From 5.00pm a free evening concert will be hosted on the main stage with a fantastic line-up of performers and bands including: Absolutely Elton, an outstanding tribute to Elton John, and local powerhouse duo Roulette bringing top hits from the 80s and 90s.

Headlining the evening is Neville Staple - From The Specials performing ska classics and much loved hits from his 40+ year music career.

Meanwhile, a new reusable cup scheme being introduced at today's event.

There will be specific recycling bins for cans and plastic bottles as well as larger mixed recycling bins.

It means there’s an additional upfront cost of £1 per drink on the first purchase. People can then choose to keep the cup or return it for a refund once they’ve finished.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own reusable coffee cups and water bottles, which can be refilled at the free water station next to the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

Armed Forces Day will end a week of celebrations for Armed Forces Week in Plymouth.

On Monday, the Armed Forces Flag was raised outside Plymouth Guildhall and on Thursday the Rehabilitation Triathlon took place.
