From tonight, the A379 will be closed until the end of the week so a new footbridge can be installed between the Chudleigh Road and Devon Hotel near Exeter.

Those travelling on the road face a quarter of an hour diversion from 10pm tonight (29 May) until midnight on Friday (2 June).

The footbridge has already been delivered to the site in sections, with engineers having built it on the roadside ready to be lifted into place by a large crane in one full piece.

Devon County Council say they have chosen half-term to close the road to 'take advantage' of reduced commuter traffic during the half-term break.

The road will be closed with “Road Closed Access Only” signs.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management said: “Advanced notification signs will be displayed on surrounding roads in the weeks leading up to the work and diversion signs will be in place as the work takes place.

“We would be grateful if road users could observe the restrictions in place to help us ensure the safety of the public and of our workforce.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the works some noise is unavoidable. We will however attempt to keep this to a minimum, and please accept our apologies in advance.”
