A major house fire in Devon closed a busy A-road in Aveton Gifford overnight and into the morning.

The A379 has now opened, but investigations into the cause continue at the domestic property in the South Hams.

Fire crews were sent to reports of a house on fire between Modbury and Kingsbridge early this morning (Wednesday 16 February)

When they arrived crews requested further assistance as the building was well alight, and police were requested to close the road.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service say a heating oil tank is involved, along with two vehicles near the property.

At 02:49 this morning, firefighters confirmed 50% of the property was affected by fire, one external ruptured oil drum, and two cars.

The fire was being fanned by winds, which hindered the crews progress.

Firefighters used air foam jet, along with a ladder and lighting, a fire hydrant and a nearby swimming pool being used as a water source.

Fire crews say steady progress is being made.
