The Grade 2 listed bridge over Buxton Road, which was built in 1863, is to be replaced and upgraded.

It all begins in early January and will be completed in April 2023.

So engineers can replace the bridge safely, Buxton Road will need to be closed as follows:

From 9 January – 15 January 2023, there will be single line traffic under the structure.

From 16 January – 31 March 2023, the road will be fully closed to traffic.

From 16 February – 6 March 2023, there will be no pedestrian access under the bridge.

From 17 February – 28 February 2023, there will be no railway services between Hazel Grove and Buxton with rail replacement buses operating.

Following meetings this week involving rail and council representatives and the High Peak MP Robert Largan over the extent of disruption, some alterations have been clarified.

HGVs will be directed via the A5004 to Buxton and A6 to Bridgemont, with special arrangements for emergency vehicles using Old Road.

Some bus services will divert via Chapel-en-le-Frith and the A6 bypass.

Mr Largan also says rail bosses will engage with businesses affected south of the bridge.

Three drop-in sessions will take place on Thursday 5th January for information at Whaley Bridge Uniting Church from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm, and at the Mechanics Institute between 5pm and 7pm.
