Trees gifted to Derbyshire through Platinum Jubilee scheme
They'll be dedicated to local schools and organisations
Six trees from the Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’ will be gifted to Derbyshire and dedicated to county organisations and schools, it's been announced.
The nationwide tree-planting initiative was launched by Her Majesty to mark her Platinum Jubilee.
The 6 Derbyshire recipients are among more than 300 organisations set to receive or have dedicated in their name one of the trees from the ‘Tree of Trees’, which stood in front of Buckingham Palace at the height of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London in June.
The Derbyshire recipients who will have a tree dedicated to them are:
Alfreton Park School, Alfreton
Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, Buxton
Derbyshire Children’s Homes
Derbyshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, Derby
Landmarks College, Eckington
The Royal School for the Deaf, Derby.
The 6 trees coming to Derbyshire will be hornbeam trees which are known to prosper and thrive in the county’s climate and soil. The 6 trees were among 350 saplings that formed the foliage of the Tree of Trees, seen on TV during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations by more than one billion people worldwide.
They are to be officially planted at an event at Shipley Country Park later this month and will form a coppice, to be titled The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Coppice, Derbyshire, in memory of Her Majesty The Queen.
The 6 trees were secured for the county by the Derbyshire Lieutenancy which is also funding a 7th tree, a copper beech, to sit in the centre of the new coppice. With the addition of the 7th tree there will be a tree to represent each decade of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s historic 70-year reign.
Derbyshire County Council Leader Councillor Barry Lewis said:
“Derbyshire is immensely privileged to be receiving 6 trees from the Tree of Trees, and this will be a magnificent legacy for our county, courtesy of the Queen’s Green Canopy.
“We are very grateful to the Derbyshire Lieutenancy for securing the trees for our county and are delighted the worthy recipients have been recognised in this way.”
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant Elizabeth Fothergill CBE said:
“I am absolutely delighted that the life and incredible contribution of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II can be celebrated in perpetuity at this wonderful coppice in the heart of Derbyshire. I feel sure it will be treasured by thousands of visitors who will be able to see the beautiful hornbeam trees from the Tree of Trees gifted to Derbyshire flourish and grow, a permanent reminder of the joy of the Platinum Jubilee.’’
