A 16-year-old boy has been found guilty of stabbing a man to death in Derby.

The teenager, who can't be named for legal reasons, was seen by officers to stab 22-year-old Josh Carter, as well as another teenager in the city centre, in August 2021.

Derby Crown Court heard how officers on patrol in Derby city centre came across a number of people fighting in Cheapside at 4.26am on Saturday 14 August 2021.

As they began to try and disperse those fighting one of the officers saw the teenager stab Josh Carter in the neck. The knife had hit Mr Carter’s artery and as he collapsed the officer rushed to perform first aid.

As Mr Carter was left fighting for his life the teenager ran from the scene towards The Strand pursued by officers who had seen him with a knife in his hand.

As he ran from officers, he grabbed another teenager and stabbed him in the back – who then collapsed to the floor.

The chase continued along The Strand and onto the Wardwick where he was Tasered by an officer and was eventually arrested.

When he was searched a black lock knife was found in his underwear.

Mr Carter was taken to the Queens Medical Centre but died two days after the incident. The other victim suffered life-changing injuries after being stabbed to the back.

The teenager denied all three charges of murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife.

However, after a two-week trial, he was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, section 20 grievous bodily harm and possession of a knife.

Detective Chief Inspector Sally Blaicklock, who led the investigation into the incident, said:

“In a few moments of violence three lives were altered forever.

“Josh Carter was killed, and another young man was left with injuries that will remain with him for the rest of his life.

“While this boy, who for reasons that are only known to himself took a knife with him into the city that night, is now facing a substantial prison sentence.

“My thoughts, along with all those at Derbyshire Constabulary, remain with Mr Carter’s family and friends – as well as with the young man who survived the attack.”

The teenager will be sentenced at Derby Crown Court at a date yet to be set.
