In Hathersage, people are reacting to the talks around COP 26 and are trying to make sense of what is going on.

Sustainably-minded outdoor shop Alpkit has noticed its customers talking more about how they can go green. The branch also has a clothing repair station which helps to fix and reuse clothes to reduce waste which has become more popular with customers since lockdown.

Supervisor Lizzie Harper at the shop has noticed that environmentalism is key for people in Derbyshire, and particularly in Hathersage with nature landmarks just a stones throw away. She said:

"Especially with Stanage just there, people are very aware, and people come in and want to know what we're doing locally with community things."

"No one's really talked about the actual conference itself, but there's a lot of people coming into the shop that are very aware of climate issues; they're very environmentally aware I would say."

Having conversations about climate change

Residents in the village are also navigating finding a balance between educating themselves on sustainability to be able to talk openly about the subject, as well as having some detachment from the news and what is going on. Lizzie added:

"I saw the news this morning, my partner turned it on as I was leaving the house... The only snippet I got was about the aircrafts, and all the private planes coming in."

"I think a lot of people should be talking about it a lot more, but I'd like to know more about the issue before having those conversations."
