In what's being described as a 'defining moment' for the profession, nurses will start voting next month on whether to take strike action.

If members of the Royal College of Nursing support strikes, it will be their first ever in England.

Mel Kerr, who is a nurse and member of the trade union in the East Midlands, tells us she feels forced into it by the Government.

"They have failed to put recruitment and retention at the forefront of their decision making. Plus they do not adequately fund the NHS and healthcare services. As a result we have staff with morale at an all time low. They're on their knees with the workload we face."

Meanwhile, the Department of Health say they're working to boost recruitment, training and retention to ensure the NHS has a long - term sustainable nursing workforce.
