A recreation ground is to benefit from an upgraded football pitch, as well as a new foot and cycle path.

Acting in their role as trustees of Clay Cross and Danesmoor Miners’ Welfare Recreation Ground Charity, members of North East Derbyshire District Council approved the installation of a 3G football pitch at Sharley Park in a meeting of full council on Monday, May 23.

Councillor Alan Powell, portfolio holder for leisure, communities and communications, commented: “As part of the huge Sharley Park development we want to replace a rather decrepit football pitch with a brand new spanking shiny 3G pitch.

“It’s still on the existing site, so it’s not moving anywhere, it’s just going to be better.

“At the same time as part of it we want to install a footpath and a cyclepath which will probably be a measured mile to be installed on the trust land.”

The redevelopment of Sharley Park Leisure Centre is one of the ten projects that make up the £24m Clay Cross Deal and involve turning it into a community hub offering health provision and support services, as well as leisure facilities.
