A man from Derby has been jailed for 18 years after being convicted for raping a child on Tuesday.

Mark Wetton, 46, plead guilty on Tuesday (December 7th) to the offences and will be put on the sex offenders' register for the rest of his life.

In addition to his 18 year sentence, Wetton also has one year on extended licence, in order to protect the public from serious harm.

The 46-year-old had abused the young teenage girl and left her with serious mental health issues.

After being triggered by the smell of his aftershave, the victim was able to confide in her family and friends, who alerted the police and arrested the man.

Speaking about the case, Detective Constable Luanne Heeley - who investigated the case - hoped that the result could encourage other victims to come forward.

“We welcome this significant custodial sentence, as Wetton persistently offended and targeted a vulnerable young child," she said.

“The dreadful offences he committed will no doubt have a long-lasting effect on the victim, and she has shown immense bravery in being able to come forward and report what happened to her.

“I hope that Wetton’s sentencing encourages anyone who has been suffered to similar offending to report it, and feel confident that they will receive the help and support they need from our specialist officers and other support agencies we work alongside.”
