A robber who left a man unconscious after a brutal assault and then used his cash cards to buy booze, chocolate and tobacco has been jailed.

Kaspars Dumbrovskis, followed his victim, a man in his 40s, as he left Groove Bar in the town centre at around 3am on Sunday 30 July 2023.

The 36-year-old continued to follow the man for over half an hour before attacking him in Chatsworth Road, punching him and causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head, leaving him unconscious.

Dumbrovskis continued the attack by kicking and slapping him before taking his wallet, mobile phone, and his tobacco and rolling tin.

Following this, Dumbrovskis then used his bank card to buy alcohol, chocolate, tobacco, and cola from a petrol station in Ashgate Road. CCTV footage captured him using the back card.

A week later, on Sunday 6 August, Dumbrovskis was arrested on suspicion of robbery and, when officers searched his home found all the items, he bought from the petrol station with the victim’s bank card.

Appearing at Derby Crown Court on Friday 8 September, Dumbrovskis, of Compton Street in Chesterfield, admitted one count of robbery and was jailed for three years.

Detective Jessica Barker, from our Neighbourhood Acquisitive Crime Team, said: “The sentence handed down to Dumbrovskis demonstrates how awful his attack was. The fact that his victim was left with only a cut to his head is sheer luck, and in many ways the psychological impact of these types of crimes will often take much longer to heal than the physical wounds.

“CCTV footage showed him using his victim’s bank card to buy items from a local petrol station not long after leaving him lying unconscious in the street.

“But it was that footage that would prove to be his downfall as we were quickly able to identify him, find him and bring him in front of the courts, who jailed him for a considerable amount of time.”
