A driver who was caught without a licence or insurance was also found to be carrying three knives in his car.

Alvis Sirmanis was stopped while driving in Cotton Brook Road, Derby, on Friday 8 October.

Sirmanis was found not to have a licence or insurance and was arrested. Officers then searched the car and found three knives.

The 44-year-old, of Tower Street, Derby, was charged and then remanded for the following offences:

Three counts of possession of a knife in public

Possession of an offensive weapon

Driving whilst otherwise in accordance with a licence

Driving without insurance

He appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 9 October and pleaded guilty to all six offences and was jailed for six months. He also activated a further four-week sentence that had been previously suspended.

DS Chris Barker, from the Derbyshire Constabulary’s Risk Reduction Team, said: _"_On an all too regular basis officers have to tell loved ones that their families will be missing a piece forever because of a moment that could have been so easily avoided.

_"_Carrying a knife makes you no safer, you are up to three times more likely to be stabbed yourself if you carry one.

"_If you think someone you know is carrying a knife then please report it to your local police force – it really could be a life-saving call."_
