Firefighters have been dealing with a fire involving around 100 cars at a scrap yard on Armytage Industrial Estate, Station Road in Old Whittington, following a call to attend the site at 6.10 hours this morning (13 February).

Crews from Chesterfield, Staveley, Matlock, Clowne, Clay Cross with the water carrier, and Long Eaton with the command support unit, have been working at the scene alongside South Yorkshire's Low Edges and Birley, and Nottinghamshire's Mansfield stations, and partners from Derbyshire Constabulary, East Midlands Ambulance Service, Network Rail and the Environment Agency.

People from neighbouring businesses have been evacuated, due to the smoke from the incident.

Other residents in the local area are being asked to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area.

Area Manager, Dean Gazzard, said: "Firefighters from Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, have been working hard since this morning fighting the fire on Armytage Industrial Estate.

"These efforts to battle the blaze remain underway and it is expected that we will be in the area for some considerable time while we bring this ongoing incident to a safe and effective conclusion.”
