FA charity tournament in Burton raises £2,000
24 teams took part last month
£2,000 was raised for the Alzheimer’s Society during Dementia Action Week at the competition last month.
It took place at St George's Park in Burton on Trent, usually home to England’s national football teams, but on Friday 19th May it played host to the second annual FA Grassroots Football charity tournament.
The Women’s Euro trophy was on display to inspire the players throughout the whole event and there was a demonstration of Powerchair football, including a talk about the format. The winners of the competition were the EFL Trust with The Football Foundation coming second.
Peter Jones, an ex-referee living with vascular dementia, and also involved with Alzheimer’s Society’s Sport United Against Dementia Campaign, said:
“I’m thrilled that The FA are on board and are making a difference for people with dementia. The money raised from events like today don’t just help people like me attend football.
“It helps our services and research, so that together we can beat dementia, and help others with dementia get diagnosed earlier. Football plays a huge role. It’s keeping us connected, supports our wellbeing, and can even help our carers have a better quality of life too”.
The FA has now announced its partnership with Alzheimer’s Society will be extended until July 2024.
