East Midlands Ambulance Service urges public to take heat seriously
They say they’re facing immense pressure at the moment
East Midlands Ambulance Service are urging people in Derbyshire to take responsibility for their health as temperatures continue to rise across the region.
They say they are currently facing immense pressure, receiving around 4,000 calls per day this week, compared with an average of 3,500 in 2021/22.
The service is calling on the public to help protect their crews so they can attend those who are most seriously ill in the region.
Craig Whyles, Divisional Director for Derbyshire at East Midlands Ambulance says: “What we always see is whenever we have really good summer days, nice weather, the calls go up”
“I want people to have a really good weekend enjoying this weather, but it is around taking responsibility so drink plenty of water, get plenty of shade, and just stay cool”.
He also says it is important to look out for vulnerable people in the heat, such as the elderly and young children.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness and confusion, loss of appetite and feeling sick, cramps, being very thirsty, excessive sweating, a high temperature and fast breathing or pulse.
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, they advise sitting in the shade, drinking plenty of water, and seeking advice from your GP out of hours service, NHS 111 Online or local pharmacy if they do not improve.
