Anti-racism campaigners in Derbyshire now accepting clothes donations to help Afghan refugees
We've been speaking to Chesterfield and North Derbyshire's 'Stand Up to Racism' group about the ongoing crisis in Kabul
Chesterfield and North Derbyshire's 'Stand Up to Racism' group tell us they're accepting clothes donations to help people who are fleeing from Afghanistan.
It's as up to 5 thousand refugees will be coming to UK this year, under an emergency asylum programme, after recent developments in Kabul.
James Eaden from the organisation hopes many will resettle across the county in the months ahead:
"Here in North Derbyshire, we have a fantastic tradition of welcoming refugees from war-torn areas into our communities.
"Look at the desperate situation of these individuals and their families who're fleeing.
"I think the majority of people in our community will be willing to give them the welcome they deserve.
"We've already set up a system for the donation of clothes and other goods, for some of the people arriving into the UK right now.
"People are literally arriving here in the clothes that they stand in, so if we can help out, then we will.
"I'm confident that the people of Derbyshire understand the plight of refugees and have empathy for their situation. We can all play our part in this crisis."
