Ashgate Hospice has opened its first clothing-only clearance shop, offering customers across North Derbyshire savings on clothing.

The charity provides end-of-life care to patients in palliative care.

Their first stand-alone clothing clearing shop in Matlock is next to their existing charity shop on Firs Parade Street. Currently, Ashgate has fifteen shops and three coffee shops across North Derbyshire.

Laura Stevens, head of retail operations, said: “The new shop specialises in reselling items that we have not been able to sell the first time around in our existing charity shops across North Derbyshire. Due to this reason, we are in a fortunate position to be able to resell those a little bit cheaper than we would in our typical shops so that people can get an excellent bargain.”

The prices range from £1 to £3, and the shop has several different types of items such as womenswear, menswear, CDs, DVDs, as well as books and homeware.

Laura Stevens added: “The reaction of the community was positive. We have had lots of great customers since we opened yesterday. They were buying items for numerous different reasons, which was interesting. Some people were purchasing items for craft or upselling, whilst others were purchasing slightly older vintage items and styling or came in to get a bargain.

“I think one of the nice things to see was just how pleased people were for us to be going forward with this different type of offer in Matlock, alongside our existing charity shop. Each year our hospice needs to raise £7m to continue its services, and £3m comes from our charity shops. The new shop in Matlock will contribute to that and will not only be a benefit to our hospice but also for the local community.”
