As part of an innovative new project, 32 life-saving emergency bleed control kits have been delivered to venues across the High Peak, Hope Valley and Derbyshire Dales.

Stocked with a range of items designed to help control a catastrophic bleed, an initial allocation of 32 kits have now been located at licensed premises and other venues across the area.

The kits are designed to be used by members of the public to provide help before the arrival of emergency services.

One of the kits was recently delivered to the Old Hall Hotel in Hope and landlord Rick Ellison said the pub’s location in the heart of the community made it an ideal choice: “You never know when accidents are going to happen. The Old Hall is next to a main road and there are incidents on occasion.

“There’s not many businesses that are open seven days a week and it also has to be somewhere that people feel they can just go in to.”

Kay Powles is from The Brook Tavern in Glossop and is also part of the scheme: "I thought it would be good to have on site if anybody needs it.

"I think it would be a good idea to have more of these kits available. It could save somebody's life. We would do anything we can to help out in the community."

The kits have mainly been funded by the Community Safety Partnerships in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

PC Lora Holdgate, one of Derbyshire Constabulary’s licensing officers, said: "The rural areas, they have limited access to hospitals and as a result of that, they have a delay in response times for ambulances.

"It seemed like a no brainer to actually put something that was key to the community within a licenced premises. The community can benefit massively from these kits."

Lora said they are easy to use: "It's got 4 main component parts to the kit, one being a tourniquet. Then you've got a trauma bandage and haemostatic dressing, which is to pack wounds. And then it's also got a chest seal for anybody that's got any chest injuries.

"There's various other bits and bobs within the pack, including a really simple colour coded card. And that shows you which item goes to which part of the body in a simple, easy to read format."

Lora wants them to become as accessible as defibrillators: "I remember a time when we had very few in in our towns and cities, and that's grown massively when you look at a map for defibrillators, now there's loads of them even in the small villages.

"I'd love eventually for it to get to the same point with the bleed kicks. I do compare them as similar, similar things. They are both life saving kits at the end of the day."
