There has been a confirmed outbreak of bird flu in Derbyshire.

The Government says birds at a commercial poultry site near Willington, in South Derbyshire, have tested positive for the H5N1 strain of the disease.

Public health authorities have set up a 3km protection zone and a 10km surveillance zone around the infection site to limit the risk of the disease spreading to other birds and humans.

Though, the UK Health Security Agency has said that avian influenza is primarily a disease of birds and the risk to the general public’s health is very low.

The Food Standards Agency also said that avian influenza poses a very low food safety risk for UK consumers. Properly cooked poultry and poultry products, including eggs, are safe to eat.
