5 facts you didn't know about Top Gear

Top Gear is one of the UK's most popular TV programmes. You won't believe some of these facts around the hit TV show:

1) It is located in Dunsfold Aerodome, in Waverley, Surrey. It was built by the Canadian Army and civilian contractors as a class A bomber airfield forArmy Co-operation Command.

2) Richard Hammond was nearly killed during season 9 when a jet-powered dragster he was driving blew a tire and flipped over at 314 miles per hour

3) The original series aired in 1977 in the BBC Midlands region and ended in 2001.

4) TV journalist Angela Rippon was its first presenter.

5) Perry McCarthy was the black Stig and Ben Collins was the original white Stig but he was sacked in 2010 for revealing his identity in his autobiography.
