Keir Starmer is our new Prime Minister and has promised to rebuild trust in politics and restore hope to the nation.

In his first speech on Downing Street, Sir Keir said the British people had voted “decisively for change”.

But what does the local picture look like?

Labour wins five seats in Cumbria and Lib Dems one - a huge change from the swathe of blue after the election five years ago.

GHR Cumbria's news reporter Joe Gartly was at the Whitehaven and Workington count on Thursday night.

He caught up with some of candidates and asked them to briefly sum-up what they believed the new MP for the area should prioritise during their term in parliament, after Josh MacAlister was elected for Labour.

"I think the biggest issue is making sure we get new nuclear to our area.

"Whitehaven and Workington, a constituency that includes Sellafield led the world in bringing civil nuclear power onto the grid in the 1950s.

"The rest of the worlds in a race for nuclear and we know it's important for net zero, for jobs and for livelihoods.

"Our area should be right at the front of the line and on the map for that in the future.

Andrew Johnson – Conservatives

"It's got to be jobs, it's got to be opportunity, new nuclear, particularly at Moor Side.

"Small modular reactors, that is the key thing to land for West Cumbria.

"We were pioneers of the nuclear industry and I think we can be again."

David Surtees - Reform

"I want to see the mine at Whitehaven go ahead, but possibly not in it's current format.

"They want a fortune, they want to do it net zero, which it doesn't need to be."

Chris Wills – Lib Dem

"They need to keep to their promises. If they don't they are going to lose the trust of people.

"That's where it often goes wrong. You get manifesto pledges and they don't always materialise."
