Businesses in Cumbria involved in advanced engineering, manufacturing, aerospace, defence, and connected supply chains now have access to a fully funded support programme designed to enhance market resilience and prepare for future opportunities.

The programme, called Watchtower Cumbria, has been introduced by Cumbria Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA). It aims to help companies better understand market trends, potential risks, and upcoming opportunities by providing direct insight.

Based on the success of a similar initiative in Lancashire, Watchtower Cumbria includes a launch session for businesses to explore its approach. Following this, two optional full-day workshops will offer more practical insight tailored to firms aiming to diversify, innovate, and improve their supply chain capabilities.

What is Watchtower Cumbria?

Watchtower Cumbria is designed for companies operating in sectors such as advanced engineering, aerospace, manufacturing, and defence. It provides practical guidance to navigate challenges including market shifts, demand changes, and supply chain resilience.

Paul Bell, Programme Manager at the NWAA, explained the significance of the initiative: "Advanced engineering and manufacturing businesses are operating in an increasingly complex and fast-moving environment, and access to timely, credible insight has never been more important," Bell said.

"This NWAA Watchtower programme will provide Cumbrian companies with a clearer view of what’s coming next, helping them understand market demand, investment trends, technology shifts and future capability requirements."

The initiative is particularly aimed at businesses seeking to diversify or innovate, tackle skills challenges, improve sustainability or productivity, and respond to economic and geopolitical pressures.

Opportunities for businesses

Lesley Robinson, Head of Business Growth & Support at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the potential benefits for local organisations.

"Cumbria Business Growth Hub is delighted to bring the Watchtower programme to Cumbria. This is a fantastic opportunity not to be missed by businesses in the advanced engineering and manufacturing sectors, alongside defence and aerospace," Robinson said.

"It’s going to be full on, but well worth the time, and best of all, it’s fully funded for businesses in the Cumberland Council area. Businesses based in Westmorland & Furness can also take part for a very small fee."

Previous success with Watchtower programmes has demonstrated significant value, with tailored support worth up to £7,500 provided to businesses.

Participation begins with a no-obligation launch session, making it an accessible first step for local companies interested in exploring the initiative.
