Cumbria Fire & Rescue service are warning children in Carlisle to not walk on frozen lakes.

The service say they've noticed a growing trend during the recent cold weather, where some kids are 'daring each other' to walk on frozen bodies of water.

They're urging schools to speak to their pupils and parents/guardians to go over the dangers of frozen water with their children.

There's been a number of incidents on frozen lakes across the UK in recent years - including when four boys tragically lost their lives, after falling into the water in Babbs Mill Lake in Solihull in the West Midlands

The fire service say that the ice may look thick enough to walk on, but there are always thinner areas, and if you fall through the ice and into the freezing water, it is extremely difficult to get back out.

Crews have visited Hammonds Pond this week, to speak to children in the local area, and put up some signage as a temporary measure.
