Third man charged in response to potential planned disorder in Carlisle

A third man has been charged as part of a police operation in response to potential planned disorder in Carlisle.

Derek Heggie, aged 40, of Welsh Road, Carlisle, has been charged with an offence under the Malicious Communications Act.

The charge follows an investigation into the posting of racially aggravated offensive online content.

Heggie is remanded in custody ahead of appearing before North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court later (9 August).

Two other men have been charged in connection with this police operation.

One of them, 41-year-old Billy Thompson from Mill Street in Maryport pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 127 of the Communications Act and was immediately sentenced to 12 weeks in custody.
