This led to an increased police presence throughout the day, and a dispersal order for the city centre and surrounding areas until midnight.
Legislation also provided officers with enhanced stop and search capabilities and authority to order the removal of face coverings intended to disguise or conceal a person’s appearance. Officers had the power to seize any item used in the commission of anti-social behaviour.
Chief Superintendent Carl Patrick said at the time: "The dispersal order and the powers which have been authorised are in place to protect our communities from those who may engage in violent disorder.
"We support and facilitate the right to peaceful protest however violent disorder will not be tolerated.
"Public safety is our number one priority, and our officers are here to provide help, advice and reassurance.
"Our advice to anyone considering engaging in disorder is not to attend. Anyone involved in criminality will be dealt with robustly."
However the potential disorder never materialised.
Despite this Milano's Pizzaria on Botchergate boarded up their windows and doors and declared they are 'all for PEACEFUL protest'.
Speaking on the Thursday Morning owner Carlos Mohammed said: "I would like to thank the people of Carlisle. They have been good to us.
"I've been here for nearly 15 years and all I can say is a big thank you. While I was putting the boards up on Wednesday a few cars stopped and said to us that I wouldn't need any boards up because we are well like.
"It didn't descend into vandalism here, but what do you expect. Anywhere you go you can get a minority of folk who are hell-bent on seeking trouble.
"All I can say to them is get your heads together and think about things before you resort to violence. You shouldn't tarnish everyone with the same brush. Just think about things.
"We put that message on the board that peaceful protest is welcome in any town or city. That's all we want. If folk want to protest please just make it peaceful."
