Warning to dog owners after reports 'poisonous parsnips' found on Silloth coast
Dog walkers in Silloth are being warned to be on the lookout for so-called 'Poisonous Parsnips' or 'Dead Man's Fingers' along the coast.
The Maryport Coastguard posted the warning on social media, saying they are aware of reports of potential Hemlock Water Dropwort Roots have been washing ashore.
It's thought the recent stormy weather has had its part to play in washing them ashore.
Although it's relatively common along part of the UK coastline, it's extremely toxic to both animals and humans.
In the post, the local Coastguard team said:
"If you think your dog may have come into contact or ingested any ‘poisonous parsnips’ it is advised to seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.
"These plants also pose health risks to humans if physical contact is made so caution is advised at this time."
"As this is not a matter for HM Coastguard, we have consulted the Environment Agency who have advised that any findings of this nature would need to be reported to the local Council."
