Pleasure Craft Escorted to Safety After Distress Call Off Whitehaven
A Pan Pan distress call was issued on Monday, 27 May
A Pan Pan distress call was issued on Monday, 27 May, after a 15-metre pleasure craft began taking on water approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of Whitehaven.
Emergency teams responded quickly, with coastguard personnel deploying to a vantage point at Quarry Cottages in Sandwith to gain visual contact with the vessel. Workington Lifeboat was dispatched and made contact with the craft shortly after.
Despite taking on water, the vessel remained operational using one of its engines. The lifeboat crew escorted it back to Whitehaven, where staff at the marina prepared for an immediate lift from the water.
The coastguard and lifeboat crews remained on scene until all crew members were safely ashore and the vessel was winched out of the water by marina staff.
