More 20mph speed limits could be rolled out across Cumbria, as a local council launches a consultation to further extend limits.

Westmorland and Furness Council say the plans are aimed at making roads safer.

Most of the new locations are near playgrounds, tourist areas and schools.

The local authority said "20mph speed limits encourage people to come together to use local spaces, which helps create a stronger sense of community.

"Calmer roads also lead to more social interactions.

"By, for example, more children walking to school or older people feeling more confident to travel independently and safely."

It added, the main advantages of travelling at 20mph are:

  • reduce congestion
  • reduce vehicle pollution and noise
  • enhance the environment for walking, wheeling and cycling
  • help communities to develop and protect their sense of place
  • reduce property damage
  • reduce demand on local services, such as the ambulance service and police
  • reduce the costs associated with collisions

The council says the latest proposals have been developed in collaboration with parish and town councils.

Residents have until the 18th July to submit their views.
