After guiding Carlisle United to League Two safety, then promotion to League One, and then relegation back to League Two, Paul Simpson has now departed the club.

It's after their 2-1 home defeat to Tranmere Rovers.

The club said Gavin Skelton, Billy Barr and Jake Simpson have also departed.

In a statement they said: "Everyone at the club would like to thank Paul and his staff for their efforts during their time at Brunton Park

"Mark Birch, Steven Rudd and Jamie Devitt will take temporary charge of first team affairs while the club begins the recruitment process.

"A further update will be provided early next week."

Liam Barton is the host of the Blue Army podcast, he said: "It's been a bit of a shocking one, to be honest.

"You would assume because the transfer window has closed, that there'd be a bit of time for Simo to gel with the new signings, maybe change the formation up."
