A man's died in a fire at an apartment block in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Fire crews were called to Main Street at 5.45 am on Sunday 8th December.

A man in his 40s was recovered from the building in the early hours of the morning, but pronounced dead at the scene - his next of kin has been told.

Another person referred himself to Lancashire Infirmary, and is being checked over for smoke inhalation.

No-one else is believed to have been hurt.

Main Street remains closed, and emergency services are reporting closures and diversions could be in place for several days.

Superintendent Paddy O'Hara, Chair of the Strategic Co-ordinating Group overseeing the response to the fire, said: "The cause of the fire is presently unknown. Investigators from both Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria Constabulary are on hand to enter the building as soon as it is safe to do so.

"I'd like to thank the emergency services personnel and our partner agencies for all their hard work in Kirkby Lonsdale today, and the local community for their patience."

People living in the town are asked to continue to keep doors and windows closed, and to not travel to the town for the time being.
