Man caught trying car door handles in Whitehaven is jailed

A man caught by a PCSO trying vehicle door handles on Church Street, Whitehaven has been sentenced at court today (July 27).

Glenn Scott, 49, of Woodhouse Road, Whitehaven was sentenced for vehicle interference and a burglary.

Scott was seen by a local PCSO trying vehicle door handles on Church Street yesterday (July 26), the PCSO was swiftly joined by officers who arrested Scott. He was charged and remanded to appear at court today.

Officers also received a report that Scott had been disturbed in a pub cellar by the landlord before opening time.

Scott has been imprisoned for four months.

Detective Constable Matt Mullen Cumberland CID said “Thanks to the PCSO who witnessed Scott trying car doors we were able to quickly arrest and charge him with vehicle offences and an reported burglary offence.

“I hope this sentence provides reassurance to the community that action has been taken swiftly against those targeting personal property, and I would also like to thank those that came forward to give evidence.

“Our neighbourhood policing teams continue to be proactive in disrupting this behaviour by conducting patrols, providing crime prevention advice, and targeting those involved in this type of crime.

“The theft of vehicles and burglary offences will not be tolerated and those that engage in these activities face a police investigation and prosecution.

“We would like to remind people to remain vigilant to the threat of thefts and burglaries and report and suspicious persons or activity to police via our online reporting form, live chat or 101 or if a crime is occurring on 999.”
