Man arrested on suspicion of attempted rape in Carlisle

Police in Carlisle are appealing for witnesses after reports a teenager was grabbed from behind by a man in the city centre at the weekend.

It's reported to have happened at around 3am on Sunday morning (30th Jan) in the vicinity of The Griffin Pub, Botchergate.

The 19-year-old alleges she was approached from behind by a man who assaulted her.

On Sunday evening, detectives arrested a 41-year-old local man on suspicion of attempted rape. He is currently in police custody.

Detectives are keen to trace anyone who was in the area and may have information which could assist.

They are particularly keen to hear from a young woman in a brown jacket who assisted the victim immediately after the incident. Officers are looking to speak with her as she may be able to assist with enquiries.
