A man has appeared in court after nearly £180,000 in cash was discovered in a vehicle stopped by police on the M6 in north Cumbria.

31-year-old Charles Young was pulled over in the Carlisle area yesterday (4th February) while making a "return journey from Scotland" on the motorway.

It's alleged that a rucksack found behind a passenger seat contained four sealed mail-style bags filled with mixed English and Scottish banknotes totalling around £179,550.

Young has been charged with acquiring, using, or possessing criminal property.

He did not enter a plea to the charge.

He's set to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 5th March for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

Young, from Lewisham, has been remanded in custody after a bail application was denied.
