A campaign has been launched to help save a rare fish species that is found only within in the Lake District's waterways.

Arctic charr fish are only found within the waters of the Lake District, such as Windermere, with numbers continuing to fall.

Now, according to researchers, the species is in steep decline due to various factors including climate change and the introduction of non-native species into its waters.

Researchers are now conducting a study to help try to save the species as "there is no coordinated plan" to stop their extinction.

Speaking on the study, Dr Steve Thackery - who is working on the project said: "During this time of great environmental change, Arctic charr, a culturally-important cold-water fish species, have been in dramatic decline.

"By working together under this important project, we can gather vital evidence on this charismatic species, and help guide conservation efforts."

The study will look into the factors that affect Arctic charr numbers within the Lake District, with a particular focus on Windermere - where the majority of fish are found.

The quality of the habitats where fish can breed are to be looked at using groundbreaking methods, and will help to inform the future of the species in the wild.

To fund the campaign, The Freshwater Biological Association is appealing for £20,000 in donations from people in order to pay for the research, as well as fostering a working relationship with the local community.

"Arctic charr are a keystone species in many large, deep UK lakes," Professor Bernd Hänfling said about the project.

"However, their adaptation to cold, clear water makes them highly vulnerable to pollution and rising temperatures.

"This project will generate critical evidence to support the conservation of this enigmatic species."
