Man airlifted to hospital after suffering serious injury on mountain
The 20-year-old had slipped on ice whilst reaching the summit of Blencathra
A man has been airlifted from the summit of a Cumbrian mountain following a large-scale rescue operation.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were alerted to an incident taking place on Blencathra just before noon on Saturday morning (January 25th).
The call came in regard to a 20-year-old man who had slipped on ice at the summit of the mountain in the Lake District.
Having severely injured his ankle in the fall, the man was unable to move, facing intense conditions as a result of the ongoing storm.
Responding to the call, the team climbed the mountain via Scales Fell in snowy and stormy conditions that hindered the rescue effort.
North West Air Ambulance Services were also scrambled to help find the casualty and eventually were able to locate the man.
Fellow hikers were also helping in the rescue effort, bringing a stretcher from the mountain to the helicopter whilst the mountain team went up the mountain as a back-up option.
Luckily, the weather had improved enough for the man to be rescued using the helicopter and was promptly taken to the hospital nearby.
In total, 14 members of the team were drafted to find the man, with the operation taking over 3 hours.
The man's mother went on to give an update, saying he was "doing well" in hospital and thanking the rescue team for their work.
