The fire service were called to reports of a large vehicle fire at the scene in Distington just before midnight.

Due to the size of the fire, some nearby residents were evacuated with help of police, and were temporarily housed in Distington community centre.

It's not currently known how the fire started.

Residents are being assured that there are no reported casualties as a result of the fire, but are being asked to keep doors and windows closed and avoid the area.

There were also road closures in place around the area for some time, on the A595 and the B5309, although they have now reopened.

Those evacuated have now been allowed back to their homes.

Ian Seel, area manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, acknowledging the large level of disruption caused to residents overnight, said: “We’d like to thank the public who were impacted by this for their patience throughout.”

The fire service have confirmed the fire is now out. They also said they will be monitoring the area over the next 24hours, and praised the "swift, multi-agency response."
