A man, caught with 3 kilograms of cocaine in his car on the M6 in Cumbria, has been jailed for 8 years.

47-year-old Rufus Onya, from Greenhithe in Kent, was stopped by police near Penrith while driving a white Nissan Qashqai last August.

Officers became suspicious after he appeared nervous and gave conflicting accounts of his journey between Glasgow and his home.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a cardboard box in the boot containing an air conditioning unit and several packages of white powder.

Tests later confirmed it was cocaine with a potential street value of 300 thousand pounds.

Onya was arrested at the roadside and officers later recovered thousands of pounds in cash hidden under his bed at his home in Kent.

He denied knowing what was inside the box, claiming he had been asked to deliver a package.

But following a trial at Carlisle Crown Court, he was convicted of possessing cocaine with intent to supply and sentenced on Friday 22 August.
