Drag story telling event cancelled following 'safety concerns'
Over the rainbow in Workington had planned to run the event in June
A drag story hour to celebrate pride month in June has been cancelled.
It was organised by Over The Rainbow who stated in a poster the event would cover theses such as acceptance, helping others, being true to yourself and more.
It was marketed for 4-11 year olds, with children under 8 to be accompanied by adults.
In a post on Facebook though the group confirmed the event would be cancelled.
It stated: "We are saddened to announce that following consultation with our venue, the Pride Month Story Hour events due to take place this June have been cancelled due to public misconceptions and safety concerns raised as a result of misguided, prejudicial and hateful responses."
Following the cancellation a spokesperson for Cumbria Pride addressed what drag actually is, and how things like drag story hour can be a tool for education.
Michael is a drag artist and from Cumbria Pride, they said:
"Trans lives are being taken because of the lack of understanding. If kids can learn from a young age then we could be looking at a more accepting generation who can feel truly accepted.
"(Drag) introduced me to a whole new community with similar ideas and interests. I believe Carlisle deserves more of this unique entertainment that celebrates diversity and inclusivity for everyone. Whether it's a mature drag event or one that is more family friendly.
"Think of it how a panto dame would dress to make it more fun and entertaining for the kids attending. They'll tell inclusive stories in an entertaining way suitable for their age. For example, it could be a child with two mothers, children wanting to wear a dress instead of what everyone else wants them to wear."
