Cumbria Police has been recognised as the top-performing force in England and Wales across most categories of a national survey.

The constabulary ranked first nationally for understanding local concerns and taking action to address them, as well as joint first for being seen as reliable when needed. It was also rated the outright leader for treating people with respect, and joint top for ensuring people feel they would be treated fairly.

Overall, Cumbria Police secured the number one spot in England and Wales for public confidence in local policing.

Temporary Chief Constable Darren Martland welcomed the results, praising the commitment of officers and staff. He said: “These results are based on direct feedback from our communities, and I am pleased that the hard work of our officers and staff has been recognised by the communities they serve.”

Recent proactive operations have underlined the force’s efforts to tackle crime and keep communities safe. In June, officers carried out a week-long initiative targeting county lines drug activity, making 14 arrests and executing nearly 20 search warrants. July’s road safety operation led to more than 100 drink and drug driving arrests, while recent figures showed significant reductions in recorded burglaries and anti-social behaviour.

Mr Martland added: “Neighbourhood policing teams are visible and tackle issues, such as anti-social behaviour, which really matter to our communities. I would like to pay tribute to our officers and staff for their hard work and thank the public for their continued support in helping to keep Cumbria safe.”

David Allen, Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, described the results as “fantastic” and evidence of the force’s strong connection with residents.

“This is testament to the hard work put into ensuring that we have good community contact by Cumbria Constabulary’s officers and staff,” he said.

“I have always stated that one of my number one aims is that Cumbria has the best police force in the country and one that is visible and highly responsive to the needs of the population it serves. There is, of course, more still to do, and we will keep on providing ever more highly visible policing, named local officers, and keep on stamping out anti-social behaviour and crime across all of our communities in Cumbria.”
