The charity Crimestoppers is highlighting that violence and abuse against women and girls often goes unreported.

This takes many forms such as sexual harassment, domestic abuse, abuse of young girls, online abuse and physical violence.

Over the last three months Crimestoppers have received an increase of 31 per cent in reports on crime in Cumbria but the number of reports on violence and sexual offences and domestic abuse remains small.

Key Facts

71% of women in the UK say they have experienced some form of sexual harassment in public places.

One in four women will experience domestic abuse during their lifetime. Domestic abuse can be physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, or financial.

The charity is appealing to those who are victims of abuse to reach out for help and support from the many organisations that are available in Cumbria.

Gary Murray, Regional Manager for the North West at Crimestoppers, said: "Women and girls should feel safe wherever they are, but unfortunately for many adults and children, this is not the case.

"No one should live in fear, particularly of a partner, family member or in their own home.

"If you are a victim of abuse then please have the courage to reach out for help and support from the many specialist organisations in Cumbria.

"If you know someone who is a victim of violence or abuse and you do not feel able to contact the police directly, then please contact Crimestoppers anonymously. Your information could change or save a life."

Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, David Allen, said: "We know that violence against women and girls is underreported, and I want anyone that has been a victim to please come forward.

"I would always encourage everyone to report to the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency. However, I understand that this isn’t the path for everyone.

"If you have suffered violence but do not wish to report to the Police, services such as Victim Support can help you. Call them today on 0300 303 0157.

"If you suspect a friend, neighbour or colleague etc. is a victim, you can report this to Crimestoppers. Please reach out – we are here to help"
