Carlisle United have paid tribute to former player Robert “Bobby” Johnston, who has died at the age of 92.

Bobby was one of the last surviving members of the United side that famously held First Division Birmingham City to a thrilling 3–3 draw in the FA Cup in January 1957 - a match still remembered as one of the greatest days in the club’s history, played before a record crowd.

Between 1952 and 1960, he made 130 appearances in League and FA Cup competitions for Carlisle United, earning a reputation as a calm, dependable presence during a transformative period for the club. Despite his contribution, Bobby remained on a part-time contract - famously returning to work the morning after that legendary FA Cup tie at St Andrew’s.

Born and raised in Carlisle, Bobby turned down offers from several clubs after leaving school, choosing instead to pursue a trade. He made his United debut in February 1952, but his progress was briefly halted by two years of National Service in Germany, where he occasionally represented the British Army football team.

Returning home in 1956, his elegant and constructive style of play earned him a regular place in the first team, and he quickly became a fan favourite before retiring in 1960.

Away from football, Bobby spent much of his working life at Hudson Scott’s (Metal Box), where he trained as a lithographic printer. A proud trade unionist, he served as both secretary and later president of the local NGA branch.

A talented all-round sportsman, Bobby also represented Cumberland at cricket and enjoyed bowls and horse racing in his later years. A lifelong resident of Carlisle, he remained a passionate figure within the local community.

Bobby leaves behind a son, Eric, and a daughter, Audrey. Carlisle United has extended its deepest sympathies to his family, who recently visited Brunton Park to view his tribute in the display cabinet outside the ticket office and laid flowers in the club’s Memory Garden.

The club said Bobby’s contribution to Carlisle United and his community “will not be forgotten.”
