Carlisle United Supporters Group describes recent abuse as 'unacceptable'
The group says there is no excuse for the behaviour of some travelling fans following the defeat away at Blackpool
Carlisle United's Supporters Group has described the abuse aimed at coach Paul Simpson and his players at the weekend as 'unacceptable'.
They've issued a statement, saying there is no excuse for this behaviour from some fans following the defeat against Blackpool.
The statement in full:
'The CUOSC board expresses disappointment at the abuse that was given to the club’s playing and coaching staff after this weekend’s defeat against Blackpool from a section of the travelling support.
'Our fanbase has a remarkable passion for this club and we understand that results of late have been frustrating, but there is no excuse for the behaviour of some fans after the final whistle at Bloomfield Road.
'Criticism of performances is natural and to be expected, but personal abuse is totally unacceptable.
'We would remind supporters to consider the incredible journey this club has gone on over the last two years.
'On 23rd February 2022, Paul Simpson made a return to a football club that was battling the dreaded drop to the National League.
'Cumbrian resilience shone through in the following weeks, and safety was assured with an upturn in performances for which Paul deserves a huge amount of credit.
'What followed last season will live with us all forever. A successful season culminated in our “Weekend in Paradise” at Wembley, and a return to League One after nine years sealed in front of a jubilant fanbase. That team played with real heart and passion and earned plenty of credit for what they achieved.
'We all recognised that thanks to the incredible work that Paul, his coaching team and the players had put in, we were probably a bit ahead of schedule in terms of promotion and that League One was always likely to be a significant step up.
'Although results haven’t been as good as we would have hoped for, the Blue Army has continued to turn out in incredible numbers across the land, even taking the largest League One away following of the season to Bolton Wanderers.
'Those incredible figures on the road so far show what potential this football club has, and the Board of CUOSC feels that as we move into 2024 and an exciting new chapter in our club’s history, getting behind the team can only help the club secure their place in League One for another season.
'There is going to be significant investment by the Castle Sports Group in January and over the next few years so let’s all get behind Paul Simpson and his Boys in Blue, and embrace the journey.'
