A man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in jail for raping a woman in Carlisle over 30 years ago.

Paul Beattie, 59, who was already serving a prison sentence, was handed a 10-year-six-month prison term today, 17th November, along with a five-year extended licence.

The offences were committed against one woman in 1992 and 1993.

Detective Constable Kerry Gibson from the Cumberland Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team said Beattie's attack was violent, with no consent given.

“This case highlights that no matter how much time has passed we will take action against dangerous offenders to bring them to justice,” Gibson said.

“If you are a victim of sexual offences, don’t suffer in silence, please tell someone and report this to police so that we can investigate.

"Support is also available and is tailored to an individual’s circumstances, and we work closely with trusted partner agencies.”

Victims of sexual offences are encouraged to report crimes to the police or reach out to support organisations for help.
