Importance of carbon monoxide detectors highlighted following gas leak in Kendal
Cumbria Fire Service are urging everyone to make sure they have a carbon monoxide detector and a fire alarm.
Nine homes in Kendal were evacuated last night following a gas leak.
Emergency services were alerted shortly before midnight following reports of gas in the Wattsfield Road area, with nine homes evacuated by fire officers as a precaution.
Four people were taken to hospital for treatment after reportedly feeling unwell.
7 homes have been cleared as safe for re-entry, with a centre near by used to house those that were evacuated to keep them warm.
The initial leak was discovered due to the presence of a carbon monoxide detector in one of the homes.
Area manager for Cumbria fire service Andy lee said: "The carbon monoxide alarm did it's job and identified a problem within a property and this allowed us to become aware of and attend the incident.
"It really was the early warning of that safety device that saved the day. It's a really positive story. We really do want to push the need for such safety devices.
"We see on a regular basis the value of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms and the importance of having these devices available cannot be underestimated.
"If maintained and in good order they really can make the difference."
