Carlisle football team opens doors to asylum seekers
Border City Greens fielded 9 nationalities on Sunday
A Carlisle football is welcoming asylum seekers to it's squad as it hopes to make football accessible to everyone in the city.
Border City Greens is a team designed to help support men with their mental and physical health, without the pressure of playing in any formal league.
The team's now hoping that by allowing people attempting to claim asylum into the squad it can further help the men with their communication.
Chairman Andrew Rothwell said: "They are just at the moment in limbo. Waiting to find out if they are here permanently.
"During that time we are going to treat them the same as anybody else that comes into our programme. We'll give them the opportunity to play, bond with each other and just share our common interest of football, mental health and weight loss.
"It was massively important to get these lads into the team. I'd rather they were playing football than not playing football, giving them an output for their energy.
"They've been great for the environment, they've come in and they've been trying their best with their English and the lads.
"They make every effort to be part of the team."
