The Arch-Bishop of York is visiting Appleby Horse Fair today to take part in a service today.

The horse fair itself is steeped in religion and history, with many in the Romany, traveler and gypsy community making the visit a pilgrimage and taking part in ceremonies such as baptisms and communions.

The town's reverend Andrew Burrell will also be leading services for both the local community and the travelling community.

He said: "We'll be up on the field where things like baptisms happen. The religiousness isn't contained to a building here, it's about the whole experience.

"I'm the local town vicar along with my colleague Fran, so we're going to be holding all the communities at the same time in our prayers and in our work.

"It's going to be really interesting. I'm just going to watch and wait and see what happens to be honest with you.

"It won't just be something that's happening in the church. We'll be there praying with people, talking to people, engaging, talking about faith issues and other issues I'm sure, as well as what's happening in the church."

The fair runs until Wednesday with the bulk of the selling and celebrations taking place over the weekend.
