Warwickshire farmers calling for more Government investment to boost confidence
The National Farmers Union (NFU) are urging the government to increase funding for the sector
A Warwickshire farmer says the Government needs to send a clear message that they support the agricultural sector.
Farming leaders are calling for the UK's agricultural budget to be increased to £5.6 billion a year.
The National Farmers' Union (NFU) argue the boost in funding is essential to give farmers the confidence to invest in the future and produce sustainable and affordable food.
Mark Meadows is the NFU Warwickshire County Chairman and local farmer.
He said: "According to 2023 DEFRA figures, we are only 62% self sufficient. We could produce 25% more. Farming confidence has been hit in last 2-3 years. Poor weather, the wettest 18 months since records began, war in Ukraine causing volatility and agricultural inflation running over twice National rate, and reductions in Government support.
"There's been an under spend of £384m by the previous government over money committed to agriculture, which is extremely disappointing and disheartening for farmers."
He continued: "Farmers can invest in productivity through new & old technology. From robotics to drainage & soil improvement. Improvements in animal welfare whilst minimising environmental impact.
"Food security is important as a nation. There are global pressures on food as climate change and global instability is impacting key exporting countries. That may lead to greater price volatility for consumers and producers."
