Warwickshire County Council is sounding the alarm over illegal and dangerous parking on Rugby’s busy Clifton Road—warning drivers to think twice or risk a fine.

On February 23, chaos erupted when a bus was blocked due to cars parked illegally. As the driver tried to pull away, a car darted out of Moultrie Road, attempted to overtake, and smashed into the front of the bus.

This isn’t a one-off. Time and again, cars parked in the bus stop zone have pulled out while buses are double-parked, endangering passengers and other road users.

Enforcement is now being ramped up in the busy Clifton Road shopping area, and anyone parking illegally—especially in the restricted bus stop—should expect a penalty. Since February, 173 fines have been issued on Clifton Road alone, with 94 of those for bus stop violations.

The council is urging drivers to play by the rules and reminding everyone: parking in bus stops is illegal and dangerous. Offenders will be fined.

Where You Can Park:

If you’re heading to one of the shops, takeaways, or bars along Clifton Road, here are some safer, legal options just a short walk away:

Moultrie Road: Free on-street parking, under a minute from shops

Gas Street Car Park: Less than 5 minutes on foot

Railway Terrace Car Park: Around a 10-minute walk

John Barford Multi-Storey: 10 minutes away

Mark Ryder, Executive Director for Communities at Warwickshire County Council, said:

“We fully support local businesses on Clifton Road, but this reckless parking must stop. A small number of inconsiderate drivers are putting public safety at risk—and that’s unacceptable.

We’ll be stepping up enforcement with police support and issuing fines where necessary. Our priority is to keep the area safe for everyone.”
