The University of Warwick is hosting their first ever Pride festival today (27 June), which will be the biggest celebration of the LGBTQ+ community in Coventry this year.
Coventry Pride will not take place this month due to a lack of finances and resources, the board has said.
The University took it upon themselves to welcome students and local communities to their campus for a free event.
The day is being hosted by final year PhD researcher at the University of Warwick, Ibi Profane, who specialises in drag performances and identity.
Local DJ Josh Aldridge is providing a soundtrack for the festivities, and guest star Ginny Lemon (as seen on Ru Paul's Drag Race) is headlining.
Ibi Profane said: "At Warwick, this festival has been organised with belonging and acceptance in mind for everyone, and to let all know they are welcome! It's why we've decided to use #WeAllBelong as our tag, because the queer community and its allies need each other more than ever, and we are exceptionally proud to have such a thrilling day of events lined up for EVERYONE from the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, friends, and family to come and enjoy!"
In addition to the range of performances, attendees can engage in a variety of funfair-type activities, including a rodeo bull.
Various food stalls are available, offering award-winning food, and local venues and charity groups came to raise awareness and discuss what they do in the community.
Sam Parr, co-organiser and co-chair of the Rainbow Taskforce says: "We take great pride in fostering an inclusive space that embraces the diversity within our community. This event serves as a testament to our commitment to creating an environment where all individuals feel respected, valued, and celebrated for their authentic selves."
Kublir Shergill, Director of Social Inclusion at The University of Warwick: "We are incredibly excited to host the University of Warwick's first 'Pride' event, which promises to be a landmark celebration of diversity, acceptance, and inclusion. This event not only showcases our commitment to creating an inclusive campus environment but also highlights the strong bond between our students and the local community."
Organisers hope to work closely with Coventry Pride and the wider community to make this an annual event.
